Why I’m Quitting Keto and Going Vegan

I know that is a huge leap. The Ketogenic diet and Veganism are pretty much polar opposites. In a nutshell the Keto diet consists of vegetables, meats, eggs and fat which is supposed to lead to rapid weight loss. I’m not going to go into the details of the diet or the science behind it, if you’re interested there is a plethora of information on the web about this diet and why it works. (It actually did technically work for me, I lost 5 lbs in the first week.) Veganism on the other hand consists of eating no animal products or dairy. So why… especially if the Keto diet was working… am I abandoning this diet and turning my life upside down? I’m going to tell you.

Keto sounded awesome. As a person who needs to lose a good amount of extra pounds and has struggled with weight issues for her entire adult life… being told that I am allowed to eat bacon and eggs and cheese and also lose weight was music to my ears. It was like I found the holy grail of weight loss diets. You’re actually encouraged to add fat to your diet. I saw so many people on Instagram and YouTube who were shedding pounds fast by simply cutting out sugar and carbs and chowing down on burgers and eggs and cheese (And of course veggies). I went to the store and bought up all the chicken and veggies and cheeses my little heart desired.

One week in, I had successfully quit sugar, carbs and drinking soda. I was losing weight and I was excited by the numbers on the scale for the first time in a long time. There was just one problem… I felt like death. Yes there are plenty of articles that warn you of the “keto flu” and ways of dealing with it while your body adjusts to this new way of eating and burning fat. It wasn’t enough of a warning for me… I couldn’t leave my couch. I had NO energy. I was so exhausted, dizzy, fuzzy and felt like I was literally the walking dead. I tried to wait it out and follow the directions I read about how to deal… but then the stomach pain happened.

I got to a point where I was afraid to go to sleep. My stomach hurt so bad and I felt so weird. My body was freaking out and begging me for help. I went to the doctor and found out that I had inflammation in my stomach. At this point… I decided to stop. Even though stomach pain is “normal” in this diet, I realized that I don’t want to hurt myself for the sake of weight loss.

Now I’m sitting here with a sinus infection and I know that obviously my sinuses don’t have anything to do with anything but I really think that all this stress on my body has lowered my immune system and that’s why I’m sick right now. So what do I do while lying in bed sick? I fall down a rabbit whole of research about the effects of meat and dairy on your body. Here is where the vegan stuff comes in.

I’m not going to preach to you all of the reasons that meat and dairy are the worst. Because I could go on ALL DAY LONG about it at this point. What I will say is that it’s worth looking into. Our country is fed the exact things that are killing all of us. No wonder my body was flipping out. I was feeding it things that my body is not even made to process and depriving it of things I needed to have energy to function.

As if the health reasons weren’t enough to convince me that meat and dairy are not good… I also found a TON of ethical reasons for quitting them for good. I’ll do a separate post about the treatment of animals in our food industry because it’s too much for this post. I’ll just tell you that you need to know about it. It’s not just about watching the animals get slaughtered. We all know they are killed so that we can eat them… it’s more about how they live. What their lives are like from the way they are conceived, born, raised, fed and then to the way they are slaughtered.

I can’t un-see or un-know what I know now.

So there you have it. I went from being obsessed with weight loss and eating meat and dairy products to making the choice to transition into a vegan lifestyle. I hope that anyone who reads this takes the time to research Veganism, or at the very least the treatment of animals in our food industry. I’m going to link a video below that sparked my interest and my dive into the rabbit whole of videos and articles and studies on this topic.

I am also going to update in about a month to share with you all how I’m doing on this subject and to let you know how my weight loss is going.
